Mi padre me decía siempre que hay personas que nacieron genuinamente estúpidas, pero que otras llegan a serlo tras un largo y difícil proceso de aprendizaje. Acá un ejemplo. Unos jóvenes de un colegio caro de Lima cuelgan en el Facebook una foto de uno de ellos, en una calle oscura, con una joven de minifalda negra, besándose. El comentario de la foto lo dice todo: “X haciendo de las suyas en su pueblo con su chola”. Las reacciones son aún peores que el comentario racista de la leyenda: “cómo me gustaría verte muerto ahorita”, “qué asco”, “das asco, no puedo creerlo, fácil es mi empleada”, “sucio”, “no sé si sentir pena por la chola o por ti, causa”, “tú sí que no discriminas w…”. Incluso la hermana del aludido opina: “te he dicho que pares de pescarte a cholas!!! En serioo!”.

Los jóvenes son jóvenes, pero estos, que estudian en un colegio de 1.500 soles la mensualidad, deberían de llevar, por lo menos, algún curso en el cual sus profesores bien remunerados les enseñen mínimamente a pensar y a reflexionar sobre la estupidez humana. Esa sería una manera de fortalecer el pensamiento crítico y así podrían entender que considerarse ellos mismos superiores por su fenotipo, su belleza o la marca de su reloj es puramente estupidez dura. Otra foto muestra a uno de estos jóvenes junto a una vendedora de caramelos de algún centro comercial de la zona más cara de Lima.

Ella ríe con su sonrisa desdentada, y él, acollerado, se muestra con una capucha pegándosele al cuerpo, como solidario. Falso: solo era para tomarse la foto y pegarla en su Facebook para recibir comentarios como “qué lindos”. Eso ya no es estupidez originaria, es crueldad. Es una sofisticada crueldad aprendida en casa, calle y colegio con mucha sutileza, a partir del supuesto que el joven y bello de ojos verdes, por nacer de esa manera y en alguna maternidad cara de Lima, se percibe como “mejor”, “superior”, “de otro rango”. El clasismo cuando se mezcla con el racismo es un arma letal y vitaminas para crecer más y más estúpido.

Pero hay otro punto: ellos aplican lo que, en algunas investigaciones, he denominado la “basurización simbólica” del otro, es decir, conferir a un ser humano el estatus de desecho. Por eso todas las interjecciones de asco o de repugnancia: ese amigo que ha besado a una “chola” está siendo signado con un estigma, y rechazado por su abyección, pues precisamente lo que pretende el grupo es rechazar esa conducta para fortalecerse como “no cholos”. Me pregunto: ¿es posible que alguno de estos jóvenes conozca que discriminar es un delito? Deberían, si es que, como insisto, pagan una educación de élite.

Sin embargo, no hay interés ni de padres ni maestros en instruir a sus hijos y alumnos en lo que los franceses denominan “pensamiento crítico”. Así podrían ser más justos en lugar de unos ensoberbecidos estúpidos. Más bien aprenden a ser racistas en varios idiomas o con precisión matemática. Lamentablemente luego estos jóvenes se convierten en la DBA y gerencian alguna de las empresas de sus padres. O, peor aún, en ministros de un presidente cholo.

it's already night in Banska Bistrica... and when we just came back (running again to the train station). i left my friend Kjara with some friends and i just wanted to go back to sleep... so i said this very prideful and dangerous phrase "don't worry, i can go back alone". so, after walking a bit i took a wrong way and got kinda lost (but not really... i was able to go back because i recalled the way i went through)... but i realized i got it wrong when i was in the borders of the city. No panic, i just decided not to go back through he same way and just invent something up =P

well, so there was me... walking in the dark, with no map and no cellphone (i forgot it that day), and null knowledge of slovak. at a point, i had to go across a grass field for like.. hum..... 300m? all dark! well, i went accross this field because i saw some buildings with lights and thought there may be people who speak english and that i can ask something (yes, i thought so just because of the lights on the buildings). i put all my faith on finding someone in some big buildings with lights (i didn't want to go back!).

well, i didn't find anybody there... so i had to walk a little more to find some hope 1st and then someone with the hope i got. while walking i found a "Penzion" (hotel) and this thought came into my mind: "this is some kind of hotel... they must have a map!!". this time i was lucky and they did have a map! the bad part was that i didn't know what to look for (i didn't consider that i didn't know where was my destination) and the host/guardian didn't speak english... !!! so, i just asked for "university", and after he pointed a couple of places on the big map, i asked where we were (i had to perform a little, u can imagine). map just helped for 1 thing: to confirm i needed more help =D

so... i humblely say "internet?" with the eyes very alike to Shrek's Puss in Boots, and he said... something i didn' understand, but make some gestures to say "sure, be my guest" (yeah, i could read all this from his gestures!). i sat down and the 1st thing i did was to contact Kjara (surely she could had manage all this easily), but i didn't have her number (?!) so i just took a look to the map in Google Maps in satelite mode (after i kindly asked for help to my very good friend Gandalf), and i recognize the shape of the dorm building! i was so happy!! and of course i was hoping there wouldn't be 2 buildings with that shape! so, this guy was very nice to print the map and give me a couple of more instructions. this time i didn't go through other way and arrived safely to Kjara's place.

Quest is Best (part 4)

Once more the scouting world gathers again for a massive event, this time in Kristianstad - Sweden. I am lucky i can participate here, and here i'm sharing some stuff around it. You can check the previous post here. Una vez más el Escultismo mundial se junta en un Jamboree, esta vez cerca de la ciudad sueca de Kristianstad. Tengo la suerte de poder participar, y aqui publicaré algunas cosas que vayan pasando. Puedes ver el artículo anterior haciendo click aquí.

When i was asked where i wanted to work in the Jamboree (because all the adults who go have to work!) i was really laid-back and said "whatever", knowing that i can either go and take pictures around... or clean the toilettes (which, if u think about it, it's a job with a high impact, its quiet important!). i'm not really skillfull for humanity purposes... i don't know anything about bakery or how to perform properly on the kitchen (i just cook to survive), not big knowledge on how to make beer (lost of people would love me, right!?), i don't know anything about carpentry or electricity (well, i know some theory but i rather avoid dealing with cables and stuff), i don't play properly any instrument, my medical skills are limited to the first aids and how to treat hung over (and that's just tea, avoid food and sleep) and in general... i feel a bit useless for society if no industries, organizations or projects to be executed. Well, maybe i can teach english or spanish and become a storyteller, so i think i have some hope.

So, the point is that i arrived where i was supposed to after a very interesting quest on my own... looking for the Noisy Cafe. It happened that i was assigned to work on the best are of the whole camp: where the scout have to play, get dirty, challenge themselves and, of course, have a lot of fun. Quest is all about challenges+games for the patrols and i cannot think for a better area or people for my work... it was amazing! :) There were different "Ages" in Quest (Cave, Conquest, Viking and Medieval), as you can see on the picture below. The Planning Team managed to make a song with some steps for every Age, using the rhythm of "I gotta feeling" (i can mention this with no problems with the SOPA or ACTA, right? if not, before sending me jail please let me delete it!) and with some more songs to encourage people to have a good time...

And thank God there was no need for me to learn any new skills, just to be brave enough to face 5000 scouts every day (but i think they were more... help with the data, please!). That's specially intimidating when your boss (Hi Hanna, Bruce, Gustav, Hende! i miss you all) tells you to guide all this people to the different games/challenges in the area... but it was interesting hehe (Bram made a very good job there!). Look at these kids (picture below).... ready to get into the best activity of the Jamboree!

Yeah, they are dancing YMCA because it was part of the ritual everyday before entering to all the Ages in Quest. Now if you follow this link Jam N - Episode 8 and go to the minute 2:11 you'll see what people think about Quest, but i think it may be even better to take a closer look to how day in Quest looks like, so here i leave you a video from a polish patrol (or maybe it's from the contingent). After watching you have no other alternative than saying and remember: QUEST IS BEST! ...and it always will be! Enjoy! Do zobaczenia!

The change of the country image and the National brand - The case of Peru

Even when there is no record or recognition that Frank Sinatra came to Peru, he didn’t have any problem on singing, back in 1957: “Come fly with me, let’s float down to Peru. In llama-land there’s a one man band and he’ll toot his flute for you”

Because of the theme of the song we know the invitation is under a romantic and exotic background and thus we can picture such labels to the country for the foreigners. On the other hand, 12 years later, there is a phrase on the Peruvian literature that will have a huge impact and will become part of the daily speech: “When did Peru got screwed?” In the book where this phrase is originally taken, Conversation in the Cathedral (written by 2010 Literature Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa), Santiago Zavala wonders why there is no sign for hope as the development, growth and freedom seem to be stagnant: “Peru screwed, he thinks, Charlie screwed, everyone screwed. He thinks: there is no solution”. The book illustrated the Peru during the 50s, that same country where Sinatra wants to take his lover is, in fact, full of corruption, immorality, social issues and gaps under the control of the military power, with General Odria as the dictator in charge. This phrase written by Vargas Llosa is powerful and full of meaning for the Peruvian population, because Santiago Zavala was not just a solitary student walking through the downtown but a picture of every Peruvian at that time.

Today, Peru is a country with more than 28 million inhabitants and 1 million of square meters in territory, its GDP per capita (estimated by the International Monetary Fund for 2011) is USD 5 593 and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) catalogues it as a “high human development” country in the 2011 Human Development Report. Known for its gastronomy and the archeological complexes that the Empire of the Tahuantinsuyo (commonly known as the “Inka Empire”) and many other pre-colonial cultures left, Peru was seen as an exotic touristic destination for many years but not as a business partner. Nevertheless, after dealing with big problems of inflation and terrorism at the beginning of the decade of the 1990, Peru found the way to be seen as an interesting location for business since the borders opened to the market under the IMF formula to fight against inflation.

It is not worthy to discuss about the cultural and historical heritage the country has to enjoy itself and to offer to the world (ranked number 4 on the category “Heritage and culture” of the Future Brand’s Country Brand Index). Just to describe roughly in a couple of lines, we can see the introduction that the BBC uses on its website (by December 2011) for Peru’s natural and cultural heritage:

“Peru's rich and varied heritage includes the ancient Incan capital of Cuzco and the lost city of Machu Picchu. The country boasts spectacular scenery, including Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake. A growing number of visitors are being drawn to its variety of attractions, such as its archaelogical treasures, the Andes mountain range and the Amazon rainforest, which makes up about half the country”.

By the beginning of May 2011 there was a big surprise for the interconnected Peruvians: the birth of the brand “Perú” along the internet, in a video that caught popularity quickly due to its creativity, professionalism and the bridge that build between the traditions and the feelings. There we can see recognized cheffs, actors, sportsmen, singers and other culture icons in a trip to Nebraska-USA, where they get into a small village with no more than 60 thousand inhabitants to deliver the experience of being a Peruvian. This is a video made in regards of tourism, with a cost of USD 350 000 although the whole branding campaign costed more than a million USD. Note that the logo of the campaign was shown on the New York Stock Exchange in March, just after days of the release of the video in Peru and, on the most important festival of the Spanish-speaking world, the campaign won the prize with the same name: “Ojo de Iberoamérica” (The Ibero America Eye). Although the cultural manifestations caught in the video do not enclose the whole cultural offer Peru has for the tourists, it still holds the most representative expressions of culture that people may seems to be interested on getting to know; and the campaign has a broader panorama than just tourism, entitled as “(…) a Brand that unifies the efforts in terms of tourism, investment and exports".

As per the words of Martin Perez, Minister of International Commerce and Tourism. These are exactly the 3 base elements of the whole campaign, and no similar effort to manage the name of the country as a brand was made before, although the Peruvian Tourism Commission has been working for more than 30 years. In another interview for the local newspaper ‘El Comercio’ Mr. Perez mentions:

“Before, even when we didn’t have a national Brand, we managed to duplicate the amount of our exports up to USD 35 thousand million, today that our exporters have a solid marketing tool that will allow them to take a quality stamp, I am sure that there are conditions to increase substantially our deliveries. We have to conceive the Peru-brand as a supplementary element of the government’s promoter task and the constant effort for innovation and quality of the private sector”.

If during the 70s and 80s the financial crisis due to the external debt was a huge problem for developing countries, now Peru is looking attractive to business further than only tourism, and there is the need to underline the differences with other countries in the region and show the relative advantages of investing and visiting Peru. As it’s pointed on the national website of the Peru’s National Brand:

“The country is currently in a renovation, sustainable-economic growth and consolidation process in the world map. We have achieved improvements on the participation of new sectors in industry, increased the public expenditure, investment on civil and touristic infrastructure, so as achieving stability in politics and economics. (…) This is the best moment to tell the world we are having a good time in the country, and that is a competitive advantage”.

As per the website Nation Branding indicates, there is the need of certain framework that will allow the national brand to have a positive impact on the world. We can mention: transportation, energy, water availability, communications, education, health, and a market-based economy market as long as people with skills or talent; as such elements. Therefore, it would have been a failure to deploy these efforts on the national branding during the 90s or earlier because of the economic instability. Today a whole new picture is in front of the Peruvians, although there are still social gaps that need to be fulfilled in order to reduce the huge differences between the very developed and globalized Lima and the unplugged population in the rest of “the provinces”, which is a pending assignment for the current and future governments. But the situation has changed, and now 55% of the Peruvians feel “pride” when asked what feeling they have for their country, according to a survey held by the most important company in statistics in Peru: IPSOS Apoyo, which results were published on the newspaper ‘El Comercio’ on July 31st 2011.

Beyond the economic growth and the benefits it brings to the society, lately Peru got more sport and cultural success than usual, considering (just to mention a couple) two Surf World Champions, a World Chess Youth Champion and a Nobel Prize in Literature. Then, nobody asks “When did Peru got screwed?” anymore, instead people are looking forward to locate a business opportunity or at least invest on the Stock Exchange (which had record results in 2007), if not complaining to be considered inside the growth model. Nowadays Peruvians are not feeling anymore this sensation of stagnation but recognize themselves as part of a rich heritage, starting by the food. This is also fed by a master parallel campaign led by Gaston Acurio, a national Cheff who boasted the credibility, variety and quality of the Peruvian food both in the internal market and around the world. Food is now a recognized element of the Peruvian identity, and we can appreciate its impact on the Peru-brand video, where the Peruvian ambassadors who arrive to Nebraska say, in Spanish and to start with the whole idea to the local Peruvians: “You are from Peru; you have the right to try delicious food!” But gastronomy is just one element of the identity, recognizing the Peru-brand and the national symbols is also an important process, as Aldo Panfichi, Pdh on Sociology by The New School for Social Research (USA) and Head of the Social Sciences Department in the Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) explains:

“(…) the patriotic feeling is becoming stronger, overtaking the political or cultural disputes. Everybody claim to be Peruvians, from the bottom to the top, and that is a difference over what we’ve been historically saying about Peru: that we were a country with lack of identity, con a weakness on the attachment to the national symbols. This was true until 10 or 15 years ago (…)”

Furthermore, the swiss Institute for Management Development (IMD), on its 2008 Competitiveness Ranking shows Peru as the 2nd best country in Southamerica to do business, right after Chile; and also the 2nd rank on Economic Environment and in Risk. Chile is not only the country with the highest Humand Development Index in the region (as per 2011 the Human Development Report issued by the UNDP), but the country with the largest experience on the usage of a national-brand. As per it’s indicated on the USA Department of State (by December 2011),

“Peru's economy is well managed, and better tax collection has been increasing revenues, with expenditures keeping pace. Private investment is rising and becoming more broad-based. Peru obtained investment grade status in 2008. In view of his appointment of a respected economic team and actions taken during his first 100 days in office, many anticipate that President Ollanta Humala will continue the sound economic policies of several prior administrations. While seeking to continue the well-functioning economic engine inherited from its predecessors, the Humala administration is pursuing a social inclusion agenda with the goal of ensuring that the lower classes increasingly benefit from Peru’s economic success”.

Let’s hope for the best future and a responsible management of the Peru-brand.

Wisława Szymborska, Nota de Agradecimiento

The poetry of Wisława Szymborska is still unknown for me; but, considering the respect she has along the diverse circles and (of course) the recognition of the Nobel Prize, i decided to get to know it a bit better and here i leave one of her poems, along the ones i have been reading, one that i like particularly. i am not really a poetry critic, so i just read and enjoyed... and i kindly invite you to do the same. La poesía de Wislawa Szymborska es aún desconocida para mí; pero, teniendo en cuenta el respeto que tiene en diversos círculos y (por supuesto) el reconocimiento del Premio Nobel, decidí conocerla un poco mejor y aquí dejo uno de sus poemas, de entre los que he estado leyendo, uno que me gusta especialmente. No soy realmente un crítico de poesía, por lo que me remito a leer y disfrutar ... y te invito a hacer lo mismo.

F n Leipzig

In the most spontaneous decision this year (so far, of course), i decided to go to visit a friend in Germany with not a big idea of how to get there or what to do, but thanks to Simón Cabrón (thanks for coordinate!) and Marta (thanks for purchasingthe tickets, come back to pay you back!) i could just be laid back about this trip. Had a great time going partying with my friends and the few hours in train meant nothing after the 20 hours i had to spend in the bus to get to my last job from home. Just so you know, there are two top figures related to the city: Bach and Goethe, and i am happy i got a couple of pics with their status and actually hang out where they did. Leipzig is a nice city, very similar to Wroclaw on its architecture, order and dynamic... totally worth to visit! Here i leave some pics of the trip... En la decisión más espontánea en lo que va del año, tomé un tren con unos amigos hacia Leipzig para visitar a uno de mis mejores amigos en estos lares. Las pocas horas en el tren no se comparan con el largo recorrido entre mi casa y mi último trabajo, y fue muy simpático llegar a Leipzig, ciudad que está relacionada con las eminentes figuras de Bach y Goethe. Leipzig es una ciudad simpática, parecida a Breslavia [Wroclaw] en arquitectura, orden y dinámica... totalmente recomendable para visitar! Aquí dejo algunas fotos del viaje...

Oe, Chorri... ¡GRACIAS!

Hoy me enteré que el "Chorri" (Roberto Palacios) se retira, y antes de deprimirme (me deprimiré pronto, pero inmediatamente iré a ahogar las penas) quiero publicar un poco de la pasión peruana encarnada en él. Nunca vi a nadie sacarse la mierda tanto como al Chorri, ¡qué entrega! Chorri, extraño verte en la selección... ojalá todos jugaran con tu pasión. Got to know that today Roberto Palacios anounced his retirement from professional football, and before getting depressed (i will, as soon as i finish here) i wanted to share a couple of pics and videos in the post. He was called "El Chorri" and played like few, leaving soul, heart and life in the field, i wish more can share such attitude when playing for the national team.

Usually it's on the beach and dancing salsa, merengue, cumbia or whatever there will be in the party or friend's music box... taking long and lazy days (before and after) under the sun and in the ocean and as far as i remember, playing dice + cards + Cranium (?) and the typical charade. Although i already spent a New Year's Eve surrounded by snow in Utah-USA some years ago, this time it was not so bad (regarding weather)... and it was in the beautiful and charming Wroclaw, in Poland... and the plan was to visit a friend because of her birthday and then go to the Rynek (Main Square) for the fireworks and because it was the meeting point :p Check the video to have just a taste of the night...

Sadly, it was so crowded that i couldn't reach the are of the stage... that and the big chance the stewards find the bottles with rum and champagne we took to celebrate. So we remained on one side of the Rynek with enough space to avoid loosing oxygen and where we could see the fireworks. It was nice... and those -2º C i saw on the weather forecast were nothing thanks to my thermal evolution, the rum and my lovely winter coat (that has to save my life when it turns into -20º C ...in theory sort of soon). Oh, and in Poland the celebration of New Year's Eve is called "Sylwester" because it's the name celebrated on December 31st. Well... here some nice pics i found in the Wroclaw's page in Facebook...

Justo hoy le quiero mandar un saludo grandote y especial a todos quienes dan algo de su tiempo a actvs educativas, de caridad, culturales, etc... porque el dinero no es todo (pero como ayuda!) y porque todos los voluntarios en todos lados son cheeveres! (ok, eso es discutible, pero todos son geniales por trabajar ad honorem!). En mi caso, la principal actividad de voluntariado con la que me identifico (y me identifican, creo) es el Escultismo (o vale decir, con los "boy scouts"), y he pertenecido a la Asociación de Scouts del Perú (ASP) y tenido esperiencias alucinantes (como ir a Taiwán como único representante del Perú, conocer al Hermano Arias, ir por los Caminos del Inca con mochila al hombro, sobrevivir la peor lluvia en 10 años en San Rafael -ARG- entre muchas otros...), y sencillamente... ser scout (y bueno, voluntario al fin y al cabo) es geniaaaaaaaaaaal. Hoy, por el Día del Voluntariado, dejo algunos videos mostrando los ridículos y geniales que podemos ser en nuestras actividades scouts. Si eres muy normal o muy sofisticado no te lo recomiendo... pero si debes de saber que yo me sé todas estas canciones, hasta con versiones alternativas jejeje. Un otoño diferente [fotos]

Ahora que paso, por primera vez, el otoño en el hemisferio norte he podido ver cómo los árboles se van quedando sin hojas de a poco y siento cómo la temperatura sigue bajando y -a veces- lo único que me dicen es "va a ponerse más frío". He tomado muchas fotos de hojas secas y caídas, pero aquí pongo sólo un par. Se ve bonito, sí... pero sobrevivir estos 2 ºC de promedio en las mañanas y los - 2 ºC de cuando uno sale por la noche me hacen preguntar si vale la pena. Bueno, debo decir que ver a los pájaros migrando es simplemente espectacular. Luego subo fotos de las mañas HELADAS que tenemos últimamente en Breslavia (Wroclaw).

#Polska, May 2009: i was going back to Poland from Slovakia and i got to meet a very and adorable lady working as inspector on the train it took. When she saw my route she recommend me another way to arrive to my destination (Częstochowa), and because my polish was very limitated i had to improvise in order to understand (if i ever succeed)... i could say "good morning", "thanks"... and no much more, of course that was not enough to coordinate with the instructor on a proper linguistic-articulated-language.

#Polska, September 2011: got myself into an introductory polish course, 15 hours with guys from the Erasmus Program and lead by Pani Brygida to be able to improve the few words i already knew. Now i am able to ask "how much is... [something]?" and got some interesting and usefull expresions like "i don't understand". If u want to catch me on polish... here i leave you some phrases, and maybe u will get better than me.

Some trees on the street may look nice, especially when autumn or spring are going on, both for taking pictures and to have some kind of internal cheer up because there is some nature around. A trip to a rainforest may not be, necessarily, a life-changing experience but surely will give a lot of perspective to a person who still finds a couple of trees as part of a “green city” (or at least a “green street”). These trees on the street are a good source to transform carbon dioxide into oxygen thanks to the magic (rather “chemical process”) of the photosynthesis, and to appreciate this we can picture the reaction of a person breathing deeply right next to a car exhaust system or at the beach, at the top of a mountain or in the middle of a forest (excluding the chance of carbon dioxide sources being around). As part of the global carbon cycle, the presence of forests all around the world have a direct impact on (the reduction of) Global Warming, which is not just a factor of carbon emissions but also the reduction of the earth’s capacity to take emitted carbon out of the atmosphere (1). The Amazon rainforest is a massive carbon extractor from the atmosphere, representing over half of the global rainforest area. Thus, the preservation of the amazon rainforest turns into a global issue, even when the “Amazonia” is shared mainly by Brazil and Peru, both sharing over 73% of the total forest area . The reduction of the Amazon rainforest goes due to the conversion for other land uses, mainly agriculture and infrastructure; and because of degradation from fires, illegal and unsustainable logging, fuel wood harvesting, and climate change. Since 1970, over 600 000 km2 of Amazon rainforest have been destroyed. In 2001 the Amazon was approximately 5,4 million km2, which is only 87% of the Amazon’s original state.

The effects of the reduction of the amazon rainforest also involve the reduction of biodiversity, the release of greenhouse gas emissions, drought and soil erosion and negative impact on the people who depends on the rainforest to live. When forest cover is removed, wildlife is deprived of habitat and becomes more vulnerable to hunting. Considering that about 80% of the world's documented species can be found in tropical rainforests, deforestation puts at risk a majority of the Earth’s biodiversity. Deforestation causes 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Of these, carbon dioxide emissions represent up to one-third of total carbon dioxide emissions released because of human causes. As a result of deforestation, trees no longer evaporate groundwater, which can cause the local climate to be much drier, increasing soil erosion. Furthermore, millions of people rely directly on forests, through small-scale agriculture, hunting and gathering, and by harvesting forest products. The reduction of the amazon rainforest lead to severe social problems, sometimes turning into a violent conflict (2).

Now it is clear that, for the wealth of the global environment, South American governments that are part of the integral Amazonian region have to take care of it for the whole rest of nations. This feature is set on the Treaty for Amazonian Cooperation, where it specifies that the Republics of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela undertake joint actions in order to develop their respective Amazonian territories. We can see here that property is set under the State Property regime (3). Among the questions we can start setting for this perspective we have to include the role of these other nations that have no sovereignty over the territory where the Amazon rainforest is located, how to involve them into its preservation and get some profit from it, considering that “preserving the global equilibrium” is not so profitable for not-top economies. In order to so, there is the need to change the State Property regime into a Common property one, where the nations on the globe will benefit directly. Because of the need of preserving the biodiversity, the people and stop the deforestation, the Amazon rainforest cannot be either private or open property.

Even when the Treaty for Amazonian Cooperation states the role of the governments into the search of development, no formal delimitation of the Amazonia or even the Amazon basin is taking into consideration. Thus we find small farmers who own land and base their agriculture techniques on slash-and-burn and are loyal to corporations investing on crops in the area. Therefore, Private Property doesn’t assure the preservation, no matter the conditions or contract this private entity may sign; and, even when Open Property may look like an interesting option due to the complexity of controlling the area in regards of its nature and extension, the need of preservation was already set, so the Amazonia cannot be helpless against any threat.

In regards of the transaction costs, to have a positive effect on the economic performance we need low transaction costs and high incentives (4). Nevertheless, this concept seems to be intricate when approaching to each production factor. We can mention, grosso modo, the need of setting [physically] the boundary of the Amazon rainforest in order to control de access, monitoring the area and assure no illegal activities are held, the management of international funds, reallocation or alternatives for the employment for the farmers and its respective induction on this new activities, meetings to empower environmental knowledge and coordinate actions, among others. We find the transaction costs are high, so there is the need of locate or develop strong incentives in order to achieve this positive effect. But, due to the complexity and magnitude of the transaction costs, it is important to focus on the factor that has the largest influence and thus, we need to review among labor, capital and land. After all the facts reviewed at the beginning of the paper, we can see that it is the Land that turns into the most important, due to it is directly what we want, need and have to protect.

Goals that are pursuit buy the countries that share the amazon rainforest area are, regarding the social dimension: to preserve the native population on their own environment, to increase the global and local aware of the importance of the amazon and to develop institutions for Amazonia governance, considering the need of a common supranational property. Knowledge for Amazonia conservation should be a target too, so local population can avoid being manipulated by not-precise-information from community outsiders. On the economical dimension, agriculture and wood exploitation should be corrected into a sustainable model, thus both timber and soy can keep being important exports. Here there should be a special effort from the government to redistribute the income and preserve the area and its native population and biodiversity. The provision of fresh water can be assured if there are incentives for sustainable projects that may involve local labor force. Consider also, that keeping nature alive can increase the touristic flow.

Certifications for timber and soy, in exchange of the compromise of maintain 80% of the forest on its own property. Thus, consumers can prefer the products from the companies holding such certification (5), but a previous condition is to have the boundary of the amazon rainforest well set and controlled. Carbon stocks markets that allow funds flow for the preservation of the amazon rainforest are also an opportunity for privates to invest in the Amazonia preservation. Permission for R&D for the pharmaceutical market, in exchange of a percentage of their profit on the new medicines related to products found on the Amazonia (thanks to the biodiversity). Local labor force can switch from slash-and-burn agriculture into hydrological services personnel.

As it was mentioned before, the transaction costs for the sustainable management of the amazon rainforest are high, and so the incentives should be. Due to the strong opposition of the local population to let the government or any external observer, the slow rhythm of the initiatives taken, the cumulative damage that the amazon rainforest already got and the not-so-strong incentives for private companies nor governments this problem just look to keep on its track. Between 1991 and 2000, the total area of Amazon Rainforest cleared for farming and infrastructure goes between 415 000 km² and 587 000 km² and year deforestation keeps on track (6). There is the need of a massive intervention to have control over it and avoid private interest to keep destroying biodiversity, but according to the numbers there is no real or feasible solution.

After spending some marvellous days in Gdansk i was forced to leave the Shengen Zone for... well, stuff that happens (but i didn't commit any crime,i swear!). I was lucky that somehow, we peruvians don't need visa to enter Russia... and there was a small part of Russia just above Poland (Kaliningrad). I got myself very enthusiastic about getting there and the place didn't fail me :) i have to add that i was received and taking care by Anka who was a lovely and caring host n i am sooo greatful! (Anka, thanks once more!). Well, here some pics! :) Después de pasar unos días maravillosos en Gdansk me vi obligado a abandonar la zona Shengen... bueno, son cosas que pasan (pero que no cometí ningún delito, lo juro!). De alguna forma los peruanos no necesitamos visa para viajar a Rusia (desde el 21 de junio de este año, qué suerte, no?) ...y justo había una pequeña parte de Rusia encima de Polonia (Kaliningrado). Tenía muchas ganas de darme una vuelta por ahí y el lugar no me falló :) Tengo que añadir que fue recibido y atendido por Anka que fue una anfitriona encantadora y muy cuidadosa, estoy muuuuy agradecido! after the amazing Jamboree in Sweden i went to visit some friends in both Sweden and Norway. Bergen was a lot of fun, so as the other places, but arriving to Poland felt pretty close to feel at home, even when i still don't speak polish (any hope for that?) and it was my 1st time in Gdansk. Anyway, i manage to have some relaxing and amazing days (thanks!) both walking around the city and at the beach. Sad i didn't go to Sopot or Gdynia... but i can go later in life, right? :P después del increíble Jamboree en Suecia, fui a visitar a unos amigos en Suecia y en Noruega. Bergen estuvo entretenido, así como los otros lugares, pero al llegar a Polonia me sentí casi como en casa, aun cuando todavía no hablo polaco (alguna esperanza de que?) y que era mi primera vez en Gdansk. De todos modos, me las arreglé para tener unos días de descanso y caminar por la ciudad y en la playa. Es triste que no haya ido a Sopot o Gdynia ... pero puedo ir más adelante en la vida, ¿verdad?

Luego de una larga clase sobre Globalización y Regionalización y otra interesante pero deprimente sobre Protección Internacional del Medio Ambiente... este video me hizo recordar que los humanos somos chéveres. Ojalá siempre fuera tan fácil... After a long class on Globalizacion and Regionalization and other interesting but depressing on International Protection of the Environment... this video made me remember we humans can be nice. I whish it will always be this easy... here you can see a couple of kids that are waiting for some pictures and the lady tells them: "we are going to take some pictures, but the photographer is getting late... i'll go to look for him and then we take the pictures, in the meanwhile you can have a snack, ok? i'm going and i'll come back in 5 min".

Creo que lo más cerca que estuviste de tu actual residencia son los casi 4000 msnm de Markahuasi, al menos por lo que me consta. Aquella vez hicimos el camino en menos de 2 horas y media, casi trotando cuesta arriba y con mochila al hombro. Creo que todavía estamos esperando a que lleguen los demás, si es que encontraron algún burro en el camino...

Aunque ahora estoy un poco fuera de forma, quizá más adelante nos podamos encontrar para seguir saltando garrocha... o al menos tratar, si es que no estamos muy viejos. Si decidimos sólo ir de trote, me imagino que podemos continuar nuestras conversaciones de adolescentes filósofos, mientras me prometas que no te quedarás dormido en medio de la conversa (como en Obrajillo!), pues dado que estaremos trotando seguro que te dolerá la caída.

No la hago más larga ahora... sólo quería escribir en algún lado que te quiero un culo. Eres de las personas con quien más congenié en mi vida (y es que congeniar contigo es facilísimo) y me apena no haber podido compartir más tiempo juntos. Bergen es un gran lugar para visitar no sólo porque mi amigo Dag vive ahí con su familia, sino porque es una ciudad preciooooooosa, realmente me impresionó. Esperé mucho tiempo para llegar ahí y no salí para nada decepcionado. Sólo caminar por la ciudad es increíble... y si consideramos que encontré a mi amigo Andy y que fuimos en bote a pasear... pues el viaje fue espectacular!! Bergen was a great place to visit not only because my friend Dag (and family) is living there, but because it is a beauuuuuutiful city. I was really impressed and i was hoping for long to get there, and i didn't get dissapointed. Just walking around is amazing... and if we consider i met my friend Andy and we went on a boat trip then the trip was way more than amazing!

Por supuesto, no fue muy difícil pasar por alto el anuncio en un afiche en la calle. De verdad que verlo fue algo aleatorio, aunque se encontrara cruzando la calle del edificio donde tomé clases de polaco. Entender lo que dice tampoco es muy difícil porque se puede notar claramente la fecha del concierto, por lo menos. Esta vez el tema de las entradas no estaba tan claro porque había que escribir a un correo y luego recogerlas en la puerta. Of course, it was not so hard to spot this poster on the street, specially since it was just across the street from the building i was taking my polish-language classes. If you think about it, is not so hard to find out the date of the concert, but the prices were not so easy since we had to write an email to get some reservations. Anyway... of course i did! And just so u know... Susana is not only awarded with a Grammy, but works as the Minister of Culture in Peru. As u see, i wanted to listen to both the Grammy winner and the Minister.

Ahora... sería interesante saber qué tipo de música toca+canta Susana Baca, no? :P hehe... pero bueno, si va al Festival de Ethno Jazz algo por el estilo debe de ser! Y así, sin saber mucho, me mandé al concierto acompañado por mi amiga Julia. Al llegar pude conversar con el Ingeniero de Sonido para asegurarme unas fotos al final. Gracias Fico! y por supuesto... Gracias Susana!!! el concierto fue un recital de poesía a ritmo de afrojazz. Qué noche!! ♥ My polish lessons were very basic, no real chance to understand a random text like that one, but we can spot some words easy to recognize. Now, it would b nice to know what kind of music she sings, right? :P But since she is comming for this Ethno Jazz Festival, there i got some clues, i thought. So, i went with my friend Julia and when we arrived i got to talk with the Sound Engineer trying to assure a couple fo pictures at the end. Thanks Fico!! and of course Thanks Susana!! The concert was a poetry recital under the afrojazz rhythm... what a night!!! ♥

WJS2011 - Setting up (part 3)

We left the action in the train, in my way to Kristianstad... right before arriving to the Jamboree. I decided to travel alone since it's easier to coordinate and find accomodation too. Now, after sailing from Kobenhavn to Helsinborg and visited Lund, Ystad an Malmö... i was finally arriving to the Jamboree. I wanted to go since 2007!!! i was very nervous, i must confess. Well... we have to start stepping out of the train... lets go!

I was worried about getting streight to the Train Station in Kristianstad because on the form that we have to fill up i wrote that i wanted to be picked up from the Kobenhavn Airport, but since i got my Skåne Summer Card to travel all around the sothern region of Sweden (Skåne) with a flat rate... i decided to arrive to Kristianstad by myself. And after they picked us up in the train station, the next step was to Check In (but the real and almost final one), and for so... we needed to make a small queue :P

Hum... so "Module Activities". Still, no clue about my job as IST.

(and as usual, i'll write that on my agenda to remember)

Next step: placing my tent. This is not that hard... since i'm very used to camp, the only problem is to find the square i am being sent to, but after spotting the guys in my contingent it was not that hard :P ...the hard part was to dialogue and set the camp layout for the peruvian contingent and the others contingents on the square. by the way... did the guys from Arabia Saudi got to enter the camp? they never arrived to the camp-grid, i think.

I wanted to visit both Västerås and Hudiksvall since many years ago, and because of the Jamboree i thought i couldn't miss this swedish cities again. My main concern was not visiting the attractions these locations may have but spending some time with my friends and just be able to hang out. I already went to Västerås an had a lovely time with my friend Sara and her family. Now it is the turn for Hudiksvall.

From Västerås i went to Hudiksvall... to visit another friend :)

I met Jenny back in 2004 in Taiwan... it was very nice to see her again
...and in her city!

Our main activity was visiting the JärvZoo, in the city of Järvso :P
...it was such a nice visit!! i'll upload photos soon

And, of course, i got to walk around the city.
It was some nice spots to see and take pictures :)

I was lucky it got sunny right when i was there.
In this houses, the fishermen stored their boats...
and if needed, they slept there too.

And there are nice statues around...

...you can even feel they are talking to you

Hudiksvall may be small, but it's a cozy place on the coast :)

but my frind Jenny just became a mom.

Hace mucho tiempo que quería visitar Suecia, y uno de los destinos en mi agenda era (sin duda) Västerås. Para no escribir mucho sobre lo que hice o dejé de hacer, estoy haciendo un reporte gráfico... esperando ahorrar miles de palabras. Tuve unos días geniales, y espero que no pase mucho tiempo para poder visitar la ciudad de nuevo. Aquí algunas fotos:

Runas labradas en piedra en Anundshög.
En el Jamboree usamos las runas... fue muy simpático verlas en la realidad.
Caminando un poco había un laberinto de piedras, muy simpático :)

Aunque Västerås es una ciuda antigua (se empieza a mencionar alrededor del 1200 dC)
la mayor parte de sus casas y edificios son modernos. Aquí una pequeña parte del pueblo antiguo.

Tiene más pisos que el edificio del Citibank+Belcorp en Lima.

Visitando al cerdo en Vallby Friluftsmuseum, una réplica de una villa tipo de la región.
Tienen casas antiguas, gente paseando en trajes tipicos y animales domesticados tipo.

Castillo de Västerås. La primera torre fue construida en siglo XVIII, para proteger
las mercancias del comercio de metales. Este castillo fue hecho Residencia Real
luego de ser tomado en 1520 por Gustav Vasa. Tuvo que ser remodelado debido
al incendio que sufrió en 1736. Hoy es Patrimonio Nacional (de Suecia).

Västerås se encuentra situada frente a un lago, y camino a los muelles se pueden
ver las propiedades en frente del lago... deben ser caríiiiiiiiiiiisimas!!!

Well, my Plan "A" failed... but not totally, since i did arrived to Malmö. I just didn't count on some stuff:

The boat ride will take me to Helsinborg instead of Malmö.
I needed a transportation card to get into the bus in Sweden.
There was nowhere to buy this card on the place i arrived to.
The freaking card would be so expensive.
Even when expensive, the card gave me a flat rate for all my transportation (train + bus).
Swedish bus drivers were nice.
I would need accomodation 1 night out of my schedule.

Regarding this last point, i was very lucky that my friend Juan from Mexico was in Lund right on those days... and that i got his phone number. He helped not to be bedless the night of the 20th of July... Dziekuje Janek!!

I don't remember a real experience sailing... and i mean something longer than a 30-min ride on a boat in a lake or by the shore, so i think this was my first time :) it was a nice coincidence to arrive on the same day as Damian to Copenhaguen. We met in 2009 when i went to Poland for an AIESEC Project, and now he gave me a ride to Sweden from Denmark. Even when my stomach couldn't hold it any longer... i think i succeed standing 5 and a half hours with no sea sickness :P all the crew was amazing, and it's very relaxing to be sailing, specially in a sunny day, i'm totally up for another ride on the boat! Thanks once more, Captain Więciorkowski... and your whole brave and disciplined crew!

i didn't expect that the 1st bus driver would b such an asshole nor the other two to be so nice. now i got my card... not only just any card, i got a great deal! flat rate for all buses and trains in the southern region of Sweden until August 15th. Now, if u get to Sweden... be sure u get your transportation card before getting into public transportation.

Getting to the camp site (part 1)

Once more the scouting world gathers again for a massive event, this time in Kristianstad - Sweden. I am lucky i can participate here, and here i'll share some stuff of my own highlights. Una vez más el Escultismo mundial se junta en un Jamboree, esta vez cerca de la ciudad sueca de Kristianstad. Tengo la suerte de poder participar, y aqui publicaré algunas cosas que vayan pasando.

After dealing with the embassies more than what i expected, i finally got my papers to take part on this great even. But, before the Jamboree starts i need to get to it... and my flight arrives to Kobenhavn - Denmark. My original plan is to meet my friend Damian there and then get to Malmö by boat, across the Øresund Strait... then get back to Kovenhavn by bus to be picked up and taken to the Jamboree Camp Site in Kristianstad. On the map it looks more or less like this: Luego de hacer más trámites de los necesarios en las embajadas, finalmente obtuve las visas para viajar al Jamboree, pero antes que este empiece necesito llegar al lugar del campamento. Mi plan es encontrarme con mi amigo Damian en Kobenhavn y él me llevará a Malmö a través del estrecho de Øresund. Luego de algunos días tomaré un bus de regreso a Kobenhavn para que la gente del Jamboree me lleve al campamento. En el mapa es más o menos así:

Even when i think there are more beautiful girls in the world, this one is really captivating. i've watched two movies where Anna Maria plays a main character and the way she looks at the camera and deploy the words on the script is simply... captivating (i already said so, hu? maybe because she really is... u know). The first movie i saw was Was nützt die Liebe in Gedanken, which also has a every interesting argument. Anna Maria is a great actress, and of course being beautiful is among her characteristics. I don't know much about her... and there is not much to read in english nor spanish, which is sad. But the happy part is that i got to see the end of this movie i started watching many years ago. Anyway, this girl is added now to the "F's Beauty of the World Collection". With you: Anna Maria Mühe.

Hoy me llegó un correo muy simpático al correo del trabajo. Simpático de manera especial porque mi empresa ofrece cursos de capacitación, talleres y asesoría... y todos están muy atentos al impacto que tiene la educación en el desarrollo económico y mejora de la competitividad. Lo comparto ahora deseándole un Feliz Día del Maestro a todas las personas que, por vocación, ofrecen su trabajo a esta noble causa. A mis profes de primaria (Eda, Luz Elena, Leonor, Velma, Charo, Hugo, Lucha, Dora, Juani...), a los de secundaria (Alfredo, Franklin, Roberto, Humberto, Manuel, Chabuca, Silvia, Sergio, Nora, Isabel, Jorge, José, Marcos, Pedro, Ricardo, Pablo...), de la universidad (Juan Carlos, Yuri, César, Laura, Sergio, Elsie, Fortunato, José...) y de la vida (¡mi viejo!)... ¡gracias por su tiempo y dedicación!

Mi viejo le decía "Che Carlitos", y aunque nunca le pregunté por qué (y es que siempre le pone apodos a mis amigos y amigas) siempre me pareció que le hacía juego con la personalidad... no de revolucionario o de bicicletero de los andes, pero desde pequeño asocio el "che" con algo de frescura y libertad. Hay dos días en que recuerdo a Carlitos de manera especial, y uno de ellos es hoy 02 de julio.

En el colegio éramos una suerte de antítesis del otro: yo muy abocado al colegio y Carlitos disfrutando de cada día. Compartimos muchos años en el mismo salón de clase, sobre todo jugando fútbol y no faltaban algunos trabajos en los que éramos parte del mismo grupo. Carlitos nunca estaba mal, y puedo darme cuenta, ahora que no está con nosotros, de la alegría que irradiaba. Como quedamos la última vez que nos vimos, espero que ya salgas de tu casa para poder jugar fútbol con la gente del salón. Necesitamos un delantero que acompañe a Juan Diego en la delantera (sí, de chibolo jugaba de arquero, pero ahora está de delantero. Yo sigo jugando de defensa: no me dejan subir) cuando el Perro está de malas. ¿Te acuerdas cuando nos quedábamos jugando en el cole hasta que se iba el sol? Qué bestia, ahora de adulto parece un sinsentido... pero hay que recordar cómo es que nada importaba más que seguir jugando en esos días. Gracias por, tanto años atrás, enseñarme a disfrutar de los días, de las amistades, y de la importancia de sonreír y sentirse bien.

¿Sigues tocando guitarra? Yo algo aprendí, pero tú tenías habilidad... me acuerdo de un día que te paseabas por el patio tocando 'Don't look back in anger'. Y seguro por andar practicando te olvidaste de estudiar para el Control de Lectura... pero luego nos desquitamos con el Paso Grupal de Geografía, no te preocupes.

Ahora que estás con la Virgen Inmaculada ¡no te olvides de hablarle bien de nosotros! Mándale saludos a Manuel y que sepan los dos que ya nos reencontraremos todos pronto... o no tan pronto quizá, ¡pero de hecho nos vemos luego! Carlos Fernando is a friend whom left us on July 2nd 1999. He was very outgoing and spontaneus, everybody liked him in the classroom. We shared many nice moments playing football, working in groups in the school and even going to parties. He had a special impact on me, since i like how well he appreciated his time to enjoy the walk, the day, the sun, the guitar and the people around. I can't remember a day when he was sad... he had a good attitude for life and it's very sad we can't share some more time together. No matter that, i'm sure we'll meet again... but don't know how soon that can be.

Uno de los recuerdos televisivos de la infancia que más presente tengo es el del segmento de "El Jefecito", donde Analí era su poco brillante pero despampanante secretaria. Fue, Analí, un ejemplo de lucha y superación ante el cáncer... y un ángel por la energía que irradiaba con mensajes de afecto. Analí, gracias por ser parte de la historia de la televisión.

i am proud i represented my country as the only delegate on the XII World Scout Moot held in Hualien-Taiwan. i made it to Taiwan due to a scholarship offered to the Peru Scout Asociation (ASP) by the Taroko Operation. Now, on the previous post about this we left the action :) Estoy orgulloso de haber representado a mi país como su único delegado en la XII Asamblea Mundial Rover, llevada a cabo en Hualien-Taiwán. Pude participar gracias a una beca ofrecida a la Asociación de Scouts del Perú por la Operación Taroko. Ahora, en el post anterior de este tema dejamos la acción cuando mi mamá me dijo por teléfono que mi pasaporte había expirado.

A nice idea for the Moot was to have "Expedition Centers", so people could get to know different parts of Taiwan... i picked up randomly the number 4 because its logo had a big Buda on it, and certainly i didn't care much because i was very excited just of being part of the Moot. So, after Linkou, Changua was on the schedule and i had to get the bus. After the rush i had while getting the bus heading to Changua (i forgot my peruvian posters on the dorm... and i recalled it when i arrived to the bus, so i went back running, and it was soooo faaaar awaaaaay... and so demanding to get through the stairs... and it was soooo hooooot!!!). Luckly, i arrive back to the bus on time :P Then, after some minutes we get to the next place: Ming Dao University. There was this very nice gate you see on the picture above. We got some presents just because we got into the Expedition Center #4 (aka "EC4"): a small bag (excellent to carry bottles of water, the camera and a t-shirt) and the cap people are wearing around on the next picture. The 1st activity that i remember (it's been some years, please understand that memory is fragile) is that the country delegates went to print the palm of the hand on cement to leave a memorial on the university. It was a great idea considering i was the only peruvian... and so, the delegate myself :P my friend Anna Katarina (the one i met just arrived to the airport) helped me with the pictures... and i have to be very humble to admit i look like i just print my hands on the Walk of Fame #win ...come on, it does look important :)

At nights we got the usual getherings, and every team had to make some kind of performance: sing a song, some sketch. Hum... now seems to be a good time to introduce you my very nice team. After dividing the Moot into Expeditions Centers, we got the International Teams... and mine was the # 444 (freaking nice, hu?). Among the members there were Andy from Norway, Mia from Sweden, Nicole and Yogurt [金絲卷] from Taiwán, and me... from Perú, of course :) There were more, but it's very sad that the language barrier was so high that time :(

We also took a walk in the streets, checked a botanical garden (my biologist friends Renpeli+Patty and JaviC must had been amazed there... but i studied engineering, i was not so excited), went to a Budah Monument that was imponent and where i took the picture u can see below. Now i think it was kind of unpolite to deploy my flag because nowone else is doing so and i was just 1 peruvian... everyone had the right to have their flag (well, at least a lesson for the future). Those monuments were very interesting, never saw faith in Budah before and the sanctuaries were impressive :)

One day we got into the university lake to do some kayaking... or whatever this is called. Later that day we did some team work and had a nice and great time with the challenges. All those days we had chopsticks for meals... and i got some practice on it, but getting a stake with them was hard... so as trying to get it cut. Well, back to the kayaking... my success was to remain up :) i had a lot of fun with my team mates and Anna Katarina, Eva, andy, Jenny, Abbas...

I recall, specially, the 1st night there. During the day we got to dance some latin music thanks to the Mexican Contingent, having a great time with all the people on the EC4. Before and after i made some friends just saying hi and getting to chat to the people around... and at night we had a nice welcome ceremony with a taiwanese event fashion where we saw local designes, a powerful drum-show along with a dragon dance over some poles... amazing! there were also some dancing and finally... fireworks. But not just common fireworks. I saw the Disney ones... and these had nothing to envy them! We all were so amazed by them that i can short our thoughts under Anna Katarinna comment: "WOW, i can't believe what i just saw... and we are just... scouts!". It was amazing, incredible... and that first night ended with the following letters:

But if you are a scout, i really really tell you: go to an international activity, but be responsible with the documents u need to handle ;) It made me very sad not to be able to go to Kenya for the last Moot :( Puedes ver la página de la Organización Mundial del Movimiento Scout y revisar algunos eventos, si quieres... pero si eres scout, te digo... y te lo digo muy bien: ve a una actividad internacional, y se cuidadoso con los documentos que manejes ;) Me dio mucha pena no poder ir a Kenya para el último Moot :(

La Señora que bajaba

Yo bajaba con tranquilidad por la cuadra. Y digo "bajaba" porque Moquegua no es una ciudad plana y esta era una de tantas calles con pendiente. Bueno... yo bajaba con tranquilidad por la cuadra cuando escucho que alguien llamaba por detrás: "Señor... ¡¡Señor!!". Como ahora tengo barba y me dicen más "Señor" que "joven" pensé que me pasaban la voz a mí, por lo que volteo a ver qué sucedía... y se trataba de una señora que bajaba presurosamente la calle en busca de un Señor en aparente estado de ebriedad que se encontraba a unos metros detrás de mí. Cuando lo alcanzó lo tomó del hombro y le dijo, con ese lindo y tierno acento de señora de la sierra: "Señor, se olvió su vuelto de 50 centavos".

I was walking down the block calmly . I say "down" because Moquegua is not a flat city and this was one of many sloping streets. Well ... I was walking down the block calmly when I hear a call from behind: "Sir ... Sir!". Because now I have a beard i am more often called "Sir" instead of "boy", so I thought i was being called, so I turned to see what happened ... and it was a lady who hurried down the street in search of a man, apparently drunk, who was a few meters behind me. When she reached him, she touched his shoulder and said, with that cute and tender accent from the women of the peruvian highlands: "Sir, you forgot your change of 50 cents".

100 years of Peruvian Scouting!

Hace 100 años Juan Luis Rospigliosi y Gómez Sánchez fundó el Movimiento Scout en el Perú. Mundialmente se había fundado en 1907 en Inglaterra, por Sir Robert Baden Powell. Hoy me da mucha pena no poder compartir algún tiempo con mi Grupo Scout o mis amigos de la Localidad de Surco, principalmente, pero espero que sepan que aunque estoy a 1200 km de ellos igual me las arreglaré para celebrar el centenario. 100 years ago JLRospigliosi founded the scout movement in Peru. It was globally founded on 1907 by Sir Robert Baden Powell in England. Today i'm a bit sad because i am far away from my Scout Group and my Scout District friends, but i know they know that even when i am 1200 km away i'll manage to celebrate the 100th anniversary.

Me encanta ser scout. Más allá de la posibilidad de participar en las actividades, me gusta porque me exige ser una mejor persona y por tener la responsabilidad de formar a los jóvenes, aunque algunas veces sea tan difícil o tenga tan pocas ganas... o demande tanto tiempo, siempre me ha dejado la sensación de que estoy haciendo algo bien, aunque me equivoque (cosa que, obviamente, trato que no pase). I love being a scout. Beyond the posibility of taking part on the activities and events, i like it because it helps me to be a better person and for the responsability of educate young people, even when sometimes it is so hard or i am not really up to... or even when it takes too much time, it always left me a good feeling, even if i am wrong (which i look forward not to happen).

Tuve una Reunión de Tropa donde el primer juego era pasar por una valla muy alta... cerca de 3m. Uno de mis scouts tuvo mucho miedo de cruzar, aunque yo estaba abajo listo para atraparlo si coordinaba mal sus movimientos, y se demoró más de 30 min para pasar al otro lado. En ese tiempo, los demás scouts de su Patrulla cambiaron los insultos por palabras de ánimo y entre todos le hacíamos barra. La presión llegó a un punto que el chico empezó a llorar... y luego pasó la valla :) Some years ago i had a Scout Meeting where the 1st game was to go through a high hurdle... aroudn 3m. One of my scouts was way too scared to attempt, even when he was already on the top and i was on the floor ready to catch him if anything wrong. He took like 30 min to cross over. On this time the scouts on his Patrol changed the insults for cheers... and we all were giving him some energy. The preassure was so much he started crying... and then went over the hurdle :)

De que es una diosa... no caben dudas.
Sí, es preciosa, linda... un ideal de mujer, hasta podría decir que fue diseñada por computadora.
No, todavía no he conversado con ella, ni siquiera me ha respondido los tweets (pero tengo fe!).
Sí, soy su fan... aunque espero no caer en la categoría de "enfermo" (pero si es así: perdón).
No, no he podido superar el hecho que se haya casado.

Todo ese preámbulo era para decir, que aunque no la conozco, en las entrevistas que le hacen ella se deja ver como una chica alegre, pragmática, familiar y muy buena onda. Si alguna vez la conozco haré los comentarios correspondientes, luego que recupere la conciencia por la taquicardia que he de tener en el momento. El que tenga una personalidad chévere sumado a la belleza divina que la caracteriza hace que sea una mujer A1 que se ha ganado el corazón de tantas personas... y ser una de las musas de mi inspiración (sí, ya sé que no hago música ni escribo libros ni poesía... pero es lo más!). ♥

F n Aruntaya, Moquegua (Perú)

The way up
It was a while since i was surrounded by snow, last time for real was in Utah USA on 2007... even when i got a light snow in Wroclaw, but it was very soft and warm enough not to get the snow pilling up. So, it was a while since i was surrounded by snow and i got excited :) ...and got some memories from that time both in Cedar City and Brian Head. This was the 4th time ever that i got into snow... sad that this time i couldn't go out and play (#fail)... but we're on our way to the village of Aruntaya, on what people call "Moquegua highlands"... which is the part of the department that is set right on the Andes. We were going up... and up.... and up... i wonder if we ever will stop going so up! Because Perú is close the Equator that, in order to find snow, we have to go very high... and this pictures are when reaching the altitud of 4000 meters above the sea level (in spanish = msnm), aprox... and for me, a guy who has been living on coastal cities, well... it was fun! :) i think that if we'd had stopped on the way up there could had been some clouds between tAruntaya or the camp where i spent the night, but we were so high there were none!

Getting to Aruntaya
Aruntaya is a small village on the Andes, in the Department of Moquegua (or "Region", if you prefer). I find amazing how the driver didn't get lost among the hills and mountains, since there are very few signs and it doesn't look quiet easy to get somewhere. I was glad to see, thought, that my Fonchy-Móvil can get into that land and make a succesful ride... as long as it is driven by someone with skills, so sis... forget about it :P It was great to see such nice landscape... it's really captivating due to i love mountains and the alpacas are very nice to see too. Here i am living some pictures of Aruntaya and a video recorded from the truck when we arrived to the place we'll have the workshop. I went there because of work... and work was going to be done! (what work? the workshops, fo course! ...i was in charge)

Staying in the camp
We first arrived to the campsite... but not the type of camp i am used to (a scout camp), but a modern one... with facilities, roof and a professional cook (Tapero, Roquita... don't be offended, please); and after the workshop we came back. As you can see in the picture below, it is isolated... but there is everything that u need but a comfortable temperature. Well, i don't need a bed, but i got one... and there are also medicines, a doctor, security, tv, cable, phone (but you need the coordinator's access code, so not so easy to use)... oh! and there is also cold... IT'S SO FREAKING COLD!! aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!! u need some more degrees just to be sure to survive, i went with a light cold... and came back with a big one, if no neumonia (mom, don't worry, i'm kidding!). But really... it was cold. I even tried to read... and write a bit, but retaining the small warmth was a priority so i stop with this activities that got my life in danger of an hipotermia. 3 thick blankets were not enough to sleep comfortable and remain asleep during the night. Thank God there was hot water for showers.... YES! and the food was great... a bit too much for me, but greaaaat!

Very high... but still, a beautiful nature
Not only the alpacas were amazing to see around, i also got into a Trout Breeding ("Criadero de Truchas"... is it ok if i just use "breeding" or would it be better to use "farm"? hum... i'll stay with "Breeding") and got to see a couple more animals very close. The first one, obviously, was the trout... but not one but many all around the place (yeah, i know... it's supossed to be the main animal on a Trout Breeding, hu?). Then i saw this little bug with spines, but i am afraid i don't know the name (please Renpeli + Patty, help me here!), and after that i got to see vizcachas, that are very common on the Moquegua highlands... hope it doesn't look quiet small in the pic. There were also many birds that liked to fly right in front of the truck while we were on the road... it seemed to be fun for them! I'm sad i couldn't get more pictures, but my camera got damaged because of the cold... thank God i got some pictures to share how amazing this trip was.

It's very similar to a squirrel+rabbit, but bigger... and still very fast (for me)

I am not used to travel because of work (by now?), so this workshop on the highlands of Moquegua was very interesting... because of the landscape and nature and for the (actually real) challenge of giving the workshop to a people from this village... but i won't take this subject now, but later. Because of the recent visit of Paul McCartney to my country (Perú) i was kinda deppressed that i didn't make it to the concert (i'm more than 1200 km away.... and i have to work, so it makes sense). Si debemos traducir "George Best" al español, el resultado es (nada menos) que "Jorge el Mejor". Hoy no es ninguna fecha especial para recordar al mítico George Best, sólo una vaga coincidencia que hizo que lo llamaran "El 5to Beattle", y que hoy el gran Paul Mc Cartney ha venido a Lima para dar (espero) un Sr. Concierto. Today Paul Mc Cartney is gonna give a massive concert in my city, Lima-Perú, and there was an article on a local newspaper talking about the 5th Beattle Best... and drawing a line betwen him and the mitical George Best. There i got to see this video, with a great song that seems to belong to "Los Esclavos" (in english: "the Slaves").

I couldn't believe how amazing it was to see this video... (the one on the bottom of the post).
It's so sad it's not in English, but the idea here is that there is a peruvian contingent (from Perú the country, the one in southamerica, where i currently live, where i am from) that gets into Peru City in Nebraska, USA. (By the way... nice to see Perú is right on the heart of the USA... oh! and America is a continent, not a country)

Perú, Nebraska - USA is a small place with half thousand people living theer, so (as usual) we peruvians get there to make some trouble... and the contingent shares a lot of stuff that are typical for us, the Southamerican Peruvians: food, surf, music... and even traffic. 世界童军模拟-台湾花莲 - The days at Linkou (part 4)

We left the action right after i finished my encounter with this african guy. Then i took the bus to the Registration Office, at National Taiwan Sport University (Donghua) in Linkou (hey Yogurt and Chris, thanks for the data!). A couple of seconds after i sit in the bus there was a beautiful portuguese who sat right next to me, sad i don't remember her... and it will be very random if she finds this blog and read i forgot her name (hey, sorry about that... we just didn't find each other in the whole activity -but once- so please, no offense!). Well, we arrived to the first location of the Moot... and this big gate received us :)

Here it looks a bit lonely, but it got very crowdy when i arrived. This picture was taken by my friend Pancho (from Chile), and he arrived veeeery early to the event, along with the argentineans Maq and Marco. They arrived to Taiwan by "the other way" (i went across the Pacific, now you can picture their path). In fact, meeting Pancho was very nice since i needed to call home to tell my parents i was alive after all the travelling from Los Angeles (12 hours) and he gave me his phone card. I had a tiny problem, since i never got to call hom from outside Perú... but we managed.

Pancho knew a lot about Perú because we used to live close to the border... and it was very common for him to get into Perú and go shopping or just visit a while. The argentineans were a lot of fun, as the argentineans always are, and we got along very well. Now, maybe you don't know where Linkou is, so before u google it, take a look at this map:

I had some problems at the Registration Office since my english was veeeeeeeeery rusty. After high shool i never got to use it but reading... so at the beginning of the trip i spoke at the speed of 2 words by minute. Tragic, of course... specially for my self-steam. Under this background it was really a challenge to say i was the peruvian participant and ask stuff to the french guy who helped me with the registration. The university campus we were occupying was incredible... it had a lake, parks... and a football field where we played a game mexicans vs rest-of-America (and you get to know that "America" is a continent, not a country), and we (America minus Mexico) won.

Got (taiwanese) Milk?

Renato had some problems with the chinese-instant-food he got, mainly because he couldn't understand the instructinos on the box. You can see the milk box on the previous picture and realize it was not an easy task to use those things. But adding hot water was enough for that one... using chopsticks was a challenge for all of us. No, we didn't get fork and knife... never in the camp. Seriously, never.

This french guy told where the dorm was... but i don't remember if the building was only for boys (i think yes), but for sure it was veeery far away from the center of the univ, where people met. Well, in fact u could met people all over the place but around the Registration Office it was the main point to gather, chill, share, sing, swap badges and all the stuff we scouts do at a campsite :P Among the not-southamericans-met-by-me... i remember a dutch (but can't remember his name) who admired Winnie The Pooh due to his philosophy of life (i'll expand this short statement, since it can be very interesting).

The worst of these days was when i tried to sleep. Really: "tried", not just "when i slept". First, it was so bloody hot that i didn't feel i was melting but boiling (well, Taiwan is an island with tropical weather and i did know it was hot over there... but i almost passed out the 1st days because i didn't drink enough water, then i started drinking 7 bottles each day, at least). The other bad thing was the guy from Panama sleeping in the same dorm with me (along with Paul from New Zealand)... he snored so badly that the windows trembled like if there was an earthquake, and i can tell because we have many earthquakes in Peru! Ah... and there was no mattress on my bed (can i still call that a "bed" if there was no mattress?).

These last two pictures were taken not in Linkou, but Taipei... where we went for the Openning Ceremony, where we got to see the President :) It was very nice to invited to the VIP reception for Heads of Contingents... and since i was the only peruvian, you can guess who got there :p Besides this reception, we also got preferential sits for the ceremony, but there is more fun to spend it with the rest of the scouts back there fooling around. No complains, though :P

We the latin-americans started to become a contingent by ourselves since we were 1 or 2 by country, as you can see on this pics above... it is great and amazing to belong to so different countries and be able to speak the same language! From Mexico to Chile, from Perú to Spain... as i said: amazing. We got lucky to find Chris over there, he is a chilean who was living in Taiwan because of work, so he had some time to understand how they think and to get used to their traditions... so he tried to explain us some stuff regarding behavior and meaning of stuff... thanks for your help Chris!

The Change Agent Project 2011, Global Village

Global Villages are events where we can get to know more about different countries, since just asking and sometimes getting involved with some games or even food/drinks. During my short visit to my home-city Lima i could get to see some friends and take part for some minutes. Thus, i got to talk to this guys who came for the project... thanks to the exchange oportunities of AIESEC. I took part myself on a project some years ago a bit far away...

This Global Village was the beginning of "The Change Agent Project", (Facebook Link here) which is an educative project developed by Aiesec Universidad de Lima, focused on empower students beteen 13 and 16 years old from schools in Chosica (a district in the city of Lima) so they can lead development projects on nearby communities, reaching people with reduced amount of resources.
